THE WIFE GOD INTENDED

GOD’S WORD TO THE WIFE

1 Cor 7:1-5
7:1 Now concerning the things whereof ye wrote unto me: It is good for a man not to touch a woman.

2 Nevertheless, to avoid fornication, let every man have his own wife, and let every woman have her own husband.

3 Let the husband render unto the wife due benevolence: and likewise also the wife unto the husband.

4 The wife hath not power of her own body, but the husband: and likewise also the husband hath not power of his own body, but the wife.

5 Defraud ye not one the other, except it be with consent for a time, that ye may give yourselves to fasting and prayer; and come together again, that Satan tempt you not for your incontinency.

A family is an organization, and to operate smoothly, it needs a head. Even Jesus has One that He submits to as His Head.

1 Cor 11:3

3 But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God.

Jesus’ submission to God’s headship is a fine example, since all of us have a head to whom we must submit. Imperfect man makes mistakes and often falls short of being ideal family heads. So, what should the wife do? She should not belittle what her husband does, or try to take over the headship. It is imperative that the wife obeys God if she expects God’s help for results.

1 Peter 3:1-6
3:1 Likewise, ye wives, be in subjection to your own husbands; that, if any obey not the word, they also may without the word be won by the conversation of the wives;

2 While they behold your chaste conversation coupled with fear.

3 Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel;

4 But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price.

5 For after this manner in the old time the holy women also, who trusted in God, adorned themselves, being in subjection unto their own husbands:

6 Even as Sara obeyed Abraham, calling him lord: whose daughters ye are, as long as ye do well, and are not afraid with any amazement.

By displaying such a spirit, she will find it easier to demonstrate godly subjection, even under trying circumstances. In addition, the Bible teaches that the wife should have deep respect for her husband.

Eph 5:33

33 Nevertheless let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself; and the wife see that she reverence her husband.

But what if the husband does not accept Christ as his Head? The Bible urges the wife to be a “witness” to him in such a way that he cannot help but see the God in her.

1 Peter 3:1-2
3:1 Likewise, ye wives, be in subjection to your own husbands; that, if any obey not the word, they also may without the word be won by the conversation of the wives;

2 While they behold your chaste conversation coupled with fear.

Whether the husband is a fellow believer or not, the wife should never show disrespect to him because she might be the only “Bible” that he reads. Surely, it is very likely (especially if she is a Spirit lead child of God) that she will have valuable advise that could be of benefit to the entire family. It would do husbands well to listen to their wives more. Although Abraham did not agree when his wife, Sarah, recommended a practical solution to a certain household problem, God told him, “Listen to her voice.”

Gen 21:9-12

9 And Sarah saw the son of Hagar the Egyptian, which she had born unto Abraham, mocking.

10 Wherefore she said unto Abraham, Cast out this bondwoman and her son: for the son of this bondwoman shall not be heir with my son, even with Isaac.

11 And the thing was very grievous in Abraham's sight because of his son.

12 And God said unto Abraham, Let it not be grievous in thy sight because of the lad, and because of thy bondwoman; in all that Sarah hath said unto thee, hearken unto her voice; for in Isaac shall thy seed be called.

When a husband makes a final decision that does not conflict with the Word of God the godly wife should show her subjection by supporting it.

Acts 5:29

29 Then Peter and the other apostles answered and said, We ought to obey God rather than men.

Eph 5:24

24 Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing.

The world’s system (society), militates against God’s design for the family in many ways. One of the main ways this is done is to have the wife employed in secular world, under the guise that one income is not sufficient to supply the family needs. That is not true, but most of us have bought into that lie of Satan.

1 Tim 6:8

8 And having food and raiment let us be therewith content .

Very few wives can have secular employment and fulfill the command of God to be ‘helpers at home’ and the higher the position in secular employment; the more likely they will yield to the tendency to take over headship in the home, disrespect their husband, and neglect other responsibilities as a wife. God’s purpose for the wife is to love and support her husband (an help meat Gen. 2:18) and if she is not doing that she is in disobedience to the Word of God.

A wife, in fulfilling her role as a chaste wife, can do much in caring for her family. For example, the Bible shows that married women are to “love their husbands, love their children, to be sound in mind, chaste, workers at home, good, subjecting themselves to their own husbands.”

Titus 2:4-5

4 That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children,

5 To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed.

A wife and mother who acts in these ways will gain the lasting love and respect of her family.

Prov 31:10, 28.

10 Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies.

28 Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her.

Since marriage prefigures the union that Christ seeks with His children, it should be taken very seriously and those that are married should do everything possible, by the grace of God to do it God’s way.

Eph 5:24-33.

24 Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing.

25 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;

26 That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,

27 That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.

28 So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself.

29 For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church:

30 For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones.

31 For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh.

32 This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church.

33 Nevertheless let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself; and the wife see that she reverence her husband.
